Italian cluster at the gate to Pompei. Lines are a foreign, possibly British, custom and totally unheard of.
Here you see the piles of pumice and ash that fell on Pompei in a matter of minutes.
Tombs line the roads entering all Roman towns. This was a way to display the wealth of the community to merchants approaching the city.

This massive mausoleum includes a row of tombstones at the foot for the slaves of the family who continue to defend the family in the afterlife. The more slaves, the more wealth.

The wealthy would use their gardens as farms to provide for the household. Here we see grapes cultivated from the actual varietals found in the excavation.

As the archeologists came upon victims in the ash, they filled the cavities with plaster to create casts of the bodies as they were at the time they were buried.
The phallus was used as a good luck symbol and built into the walls of the street.
